2. Malware

A computer infected with Malware can become quite slow (regardless of the version of Windows).

To check your Windows, you can use the free program MalwareBytes Anti-Malware.

For more details, see the following tutorial: how to remove viruses, trojans, spyware, etc.

3. Windows updates

Another factor that can cause your Windows lock, is the installation of the updates in the background. This situation is very common immediately after reinstalling Windows 8 (for example, after formatting).

In this case, the situation will only be resolved after the Windows Update to install all updates. Please note that updates are essential to ensure the proper functioning of your Windows.

4. Update Drivers

You can also avoid the crashes by updating the drivers for the components.

Install updated drivers ensures a better functioning of the system, preventing errors and Optimizing Windows.

To update the drivers of a simple and intuitive way, just use the free program “Driver Booster”.

The Calling Card Alternative
by: Robert Mann

How many times have you complained about high long distance costs and phone companies overcharging you? Did you try to do anything about it? Did you search for alternate solutions?
Calling cards might be the answer. Their low rates to any destination make them the perfect buy for domestic and international calls

For a few years now, the calling cards business is booming. Everywhere you go, everywhere you search you might find one: in WallMarts, grocery stores, newspaper stands, vending
machines in coffee shops. But the place you can find the most of these long distance alternatives is the internet. A quick search on Google, Yahoo or other search engines will
reveal thousands of websites that sell calling cards. So, it’s an easy pick, one might say. Well… not quite. According to the FCC, almost 70% of the calling card businesses are
fraudulent. Meaning mostly that they get your money but you don’t get the calling card. That means that you have to be very careful when choosing a website to buy from. On top of
that, calling cards vary in number and features, so you have to choose the one appropriate to your needs. Their low rates however, come with a price at times. Companies selling
calling cards use VoIP technology and other third party carriers to complete their calls. While not as expensive as a satellite connection (hence the low rates), this technology is
at the beginning, so problems may occur from time to time. This is why calling cards are not usually recommended for emergency calls. For calls within the United States however,
calls made with calling cards (also known as phone cards) have a good quality and connection rate, given that you have found a good supplier.

So here are the steps you need to take to get the best out of your calling card purchase:

Find a reliable website (this means no weird pop-ups, no advertisement of Viagra on the website – you get my point).

Take a look at the available calling cards and rates.

Check out any details of calling cards: usually, next to or underneath the picture of the calling card there is a link that will take you to a “Details” page. Look for maintenance
fees, rounding, any other surcharges, expiration dates.

If you intend to make a lot of long calls over a short period of time, choose a card with a maintenance fee. This means that a certain amount will be deducted from your balance
each week/month until you use up the card. But if you plan to make so many calls, you’ll probably use the card up by the time the maintenance fee is deducted. Calling cards with
maintenance fees also tend to have lower rates.

If you use the card just once in a while, choose a card with no maintenance fee. These cards usually have higher rates, but you don’t have to worry about your balance going down if
you do not use the card.

Look for a Customer Service number. Reliable companies have Customer Service, in case their customers have questions or problems.

After this, get the card you this is best for your needs and wait for it to arrive in the email. Unless otherwise specified, you should be able to use it immediately. Good luck!

VoIP Installation instructions with how-to install tutorials.

VoIP installation information and what you need to know when connecting up your VoIP service.  We have put together the information and tutorials you need when installing VoIP.  Sometimes it’s just plug it in and it works.  Sometimes, it’s not.  So, if you have some VoIP issues and need them corrected then VoIP Mechanic will help guide you to the solution.  In many cases, you just plug in the VoIP IAD and start to make calls, but in some cases you may need a little help.  In that case VoIP Mechanic is here to help you with installation tutorials, explanations, descriptions and technical help.  We also have placed some good VoIP Links together for you for additional resources.  We can suggest solutions to installation problems, and we can also suggest ways to configure your setup for the best possible experience and future reliability for your VoIP phone right people, to best practices when doing your installation.

VoIP installation tutorials for cable and DSL.

There are several different kinds of VoIP installations and environments,  We have broken down some of the major types here:

Using the numerous advanced features that should be offered can solve many small business’s problems.  With call forwarding, voice mails as emails, advanced call forward features such as follow me and call forward on busy, unlimited calling plans and virtual numbers, a small business person can create a large communication empire.

VoIP Installation with a Cable Connection.

Cable modem connections are some of the most straight forward and easy  installations for your new VoIP service.  Follow these steps:

  • Power down the devices, including the cable modem.
  • Connect an Ethernet cable directly from the cable modem to the Internet port of the router or router/IAD combo unit, (or directly to the LAN port of the IAD, if not using a router).
  • If you are using a separate IAD and a router, then you will want to connect an Ethernet cable from the LAN port of the IAD to a numbered port on the router.
  • Connect your computer into a numbered port on the router.
  • Do a complete power cycle, starting with the cable modem, (give it enough time to resync), then the router, computer and last the IAD.
  • Connect a phone with a RJ-11 connector into the Phone 1 or Line 1 port of the IAD.
  • Having given the IAD enough time to sync up, lift the receiver and check for dial tone.

If after connecting a router or a router/IAD you find that you can neither surf nor get dial tone, after completing two or more complete power cycles, the issue could be that the cable modem is not allowing a new IP address to be handed to the new device.  This is particularly an issue with Ambit modems, which usually have no name on them, but can be is identified by their light pattern.  This can also present itself if your particular ISP requires you to register the MAC address of any PC or other device connected to the modem.  If either of these situations occur then a good work around that should get you up and going would be the following:

How to clone a MAC address on a Linksys RT31P2

There might be times that when installing an IAD behind a particular router you experience one-way audio.  The incoming voice would not be heard due to the the downstream return RTP stream not making it all the way back to the IAD.  Make sure that the IAD is only experiencing one NAT translation which should be the case with most cable modems, (in the case of a DSL modem you would want to change the modem to act as a bridge and place PPPoE on the router).  Try these steps:

  • Connect the IAD directly to the cable modem and check for two-way audio.  (Do not forget to complete a full power cycle.)
  • Upon getting good two-way audio directly connected to the modem, then try to place the IAD in a DMZ zone of the router.  Configure router for VoIP
  • If the router has a firewall built in, then try disabling it and recheck for two-way audio.

Routers that use firewalls and/or SPI, or use certain types of NAT can make it difficult for the return voice to make it all the way back to the IAD.  Try putting the IAD outside the router (DMZ or perimeter zone) or placing the IAD/router first in line, connected directly to the modem and you should be able to resolve most of these issues.

VoIP installation with a DSL Connection.

DSL connections can be more challenging since most DSL modems are also routers and supply DHCP.  Some even have firewalls and will do SPI state-full packet inspection.  This can cause double NAT issues, one-way audio and other connectivity problems.  When installing for the first time you may want to follow these steps:

  • With an Ethernet cable connecting the IAD directly to the DSL modem, and a phone connected into the first phone port, power up the IAD.  Check for dial tone, after waiting for a minute or two.  If you have dial tone then check for two-way audio.  If you have two way audio, then:
  • Connect the router to the DSL modem, using the router as a switch (disabling DHCP).
  • If you do not get a dial tone, or have one-way audio then, you will need to make the DSL modem a bridge and set the router to connect using PPPoE. This will require the correct username (in the correct format) and password for your DSL account.

The following instructions can be used for many Westell modems and although it shows a particular ISP’s name, it is for display purposes only.  It will be important to have your DSL account’s username and password.

Instructions for bridging a Westell DSL modem.

Instructions for bridging a Netopia DSL modem.

After configuring the DSL modem to a bridge the next step will be to configure the router/IAD to use PPPoE as it’s connection type.

Instructions for setting a Linksys Router to PPPoE.

Instructions for setting a Linksys RT31P2 to PPPoE.

Instructions for setting a Linksys RT31P2 or RTP300 ATA to PPPoE.

Instructions for setting a Motorola VT1000 ATA to PPPoE

Instructions for setting a Motorola VT2442 ATA to PPPoE

Instructions for setting a Vonage V-Portal to PPPoE.

Configure Cisco/Linksys PAP2T for VoIP

If after configuring the DSL modem into bridge mode you still experience a loss of incoming audio, then the particular router that you are using may not be sending the return RTP back correctly.  Try placing the IAD into a DMZ zone of the router. One-way audio in VoIP

Installation VoIP in a Business Networked Environment.

Installation in more complicated networks may require special configurations, depending on the actual network.  One of the most important correctable issues would be to check for double NAT.  A few ideas to overcome installation problems are:

  • Connect the IAD directly to the first device and check for two-way audio.  If you get one-way audio or no dial tone, then the issue will most likely be SIP unfriendly NAT, or a firewall that is not allowing the needed packets to cross.
  • Try port forwarding or IP tunneling; send the needed  packets directly to the IAD.  These will usually be UDP ports 5060, 5061 and a range of higher UDP ports.  You will need to get the exact ports from your provider.
  • Place the IAD in a DMZ or perimeter zone, or
  • Place the IAD outside any firewall and NAT, allowing it to receive a public IP address.
  • Set QOS (Quality of Service) for high priority for Voice traffic.

Basic network design for VoIP

Remember that different NAT transversals and firewalls can play havoc with SIP.  The issue occurs due the nature of the VoIP protocols.  The signaling of the device is handled by one protocol, but the voice is handled by another protocol.  The voice protocol may not be associated with the device, so the router does not know where to send that information.  The result can be one-way audio.  VoIP Wiki

What’s Your IQ on Basic PC Phone (VoIP) Knowledge
by: Dee Scrip

Short T/F quiz

T / F You can save a significant amount of money using VoIP rather than traditional telephone/cell phone calling methods.

T / F The minimum requirement for VoIP is a broadband (high speed) connection.

T / F VoIP security is not an issue to be concerned about because most computers are protected with firewalls.

T / F Over 75% of the world will be using VoIP for communication within the next 3-4 years.

T / F You can make all your phone calls anywhere in the world from your computer.

T / F Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks are perfectly safe to use, especially if your computer is protected with firewalls.

Answers

1. The answer is True. In fact, it is the tremendous savings of up to 80% off traditional phone calling that makes VoIP attractive to consumers and businesses. The only equipment
needed for VoIP is your PC and a microphone (if one is not built into your PC). Beware of VoIP service providers that require you to purchase additional equipment and/or sign
contracts.

2. The answer is False. Although the public has been fed a steady diet that the minimum requirement for VoIP is a high speed (broadband) connection, this is absolutely false.

Over 90% of the VoIP providers have used this false premise as a smokescreen to take your focus off the fact that their priority was and is to line their own pockets rather than
expend the time, effort, and funds to develop technology that incorporates dial up capability.

The technology required for dial up connections to use VoIP involves the ability to compress data packets down to a minimum size of 8 kbps prior to traveling over the Internet.

3. The answer is False. Security should be the most important feature of any VoIP solution provider. Firewalls do not incorporate protection for VoIP. VoIP security should
incorporate protection against identity theft, Trojan horses, viruses, and worms.

Craig Pollard of Siemens advised that “Voice must be protected like any other application”. He further stated that, “Along with IT directors and telecom managers, a number of
financial directors came to our road shows, which may not be surprising considering the damaging potential of VoIP threats if a network is not properly protected.”

Over 90% of VoIP solution providers do not operate on secure lines. These providers, in order to save a few dollars at your expense, operate on industry standard codec (encryption
codes) and industry standard protocols which are publicly open and interpretable. Hacker friendly providers offer hacker manuals, software, programs, and even processor chips that
makes accessibility to your computer from these industry standards – as enticing as chum is to sharks in a feeding frenzy.

When a computer hacker gains unauthorized access to your computer, their sole purpose is to steal your identity and sell your personal and confidential information to other
criminal entities. In addition, they often plant Trojan horses, viruses, and worms into your computer.

4. The answer is True. Industry insiders such AT&T says, “VoIP traffic is projected to account for approximately 75% of the world’s voice traffic by 2007”. This suggests a major
paradigm shift in communication.

5. The answer is True. Not only can you make all your phone calls anywhere in the world from your computer, you can also travel with your computer phone. Simply by bringing your
unique number and password, you can download your phone with your entire contact list. Of course, PC to PC is usually free between subscribers. PC to telephones and cell phones
typically involves fees at drastically reduced rates when compared to traditional calling rates.

6. The answer is False. P2P networks use industry standard codec (encryption codes) and industry standard protocols which are publicly open and interpretable.

John Ashcroft, Attorney General, in remarks at the High Technology Crime Investigation Association 2004 International Training Conference held on September 13, 2004 stated, “We
have seen worms and viruses attack…disrupting basic services…And with the increased use of the Internet and especially peer-to-peer networking, we have seen malicious code spread
more quickly and infect more personal computers than ever before. The cost of these worms, viruses, and denial-of-service attacks…reaches into the billions of dollars.”

P2P networks such as Skype operate by taking bandwidth (information carrying capacity) from customers on their service to assist other customers using their service – analogous to
a symbiotic relationship. The tools that enable them to accomplish this are bundled in the software their customers agree to in order to download and access their VoIP service.

Another grave concern for both individuals and businesses when using P2P systems is unknowingly having your computer used as a supernode. A supernode occurs when your computer is
arbitrarily assigned as a hub.

When you are running the software for P2P services, your computer’s disk space, bandwidth, and processing power are used to help other users on the same system operate their
software more efficiently because of their own network or firewall constraints.

We as consumers still have a lot to learn about VoIP, as this technology is the new era of communication and is continuously being changed.

All VoIP service providers need to incorporate the protection, needs, and desires of its customers, as well as address security and dial up capability.

All VoIP service providers should invest in developing a proprietary patented technology that incorporates compression of data packets so that their VoIP can be used on dial up
connections, as well as cable, satellite, and wireless.

All VoIP service providers should develop and create their own proprietary high end encryption codec with patented technology, simply because they do not want their customers to be
victims of viruses, worms, Trojan horses, or have their identity stolen as a result of using their VoIP service.

Simply put, all VoIP service providers should place the protection, security, and needs of their customers FIRST. Of course, they are in business to earn profits, but it should not
be at the expense of exposing their customers to unscrupulous entities.

Why Over 90% of VoIP (Computer Phone) Services are Vulnerable to Attack
by: Dee Scrip

You are in the crosshairs as a primary target of computer hackers if you own a computer or operate on un-secure VoIP (computer phone) services.

In an article written by Daniel A. Morris, Assistant US Attorney, Computer and Telecommunications Coordinator with the District of Nebraska stated in “Tracking a Computer Hacker”,
that the “The modern thief can steal more with a computer than with a gun. Tomorrow’s terrorist may be able to do more damage with a keyboard than with a bomb.”

Ralph Echemendia, head of Intense School which trains executives regarding network security risks, stated that “Telecom providers are one of the main targets for malicious
attackers because they control communications for everybody.”

Sophisticated hackers have learned how to tap into sensitive information traveling on the Internet, and their focal point is communication.

How is this possible?

It is fairly simple. First, you should be aware that email services operate off of email servers, and web services operate off of web servers. Both email servers and web servers
are built for data and not for voice.

Because VoIP has voice, it requires a system that will convert the voice into data packets to travel across the Internet, and then convert back to voice at destination. However,
VoIP should not be considered just another application residing on a data network, as it necessitates a real time service due to performance expectations (e.g., quality of sound).

The majority of VoIP computer phones require a minimum of 20 kps (kilobytes per second) of bandwidth (information carrying capacity) for data packets to travel across the Internet,
which is why most require a minimum high speed Internet connection in order to function without corrupting the quality of the voice.

Although in the minority, a few VoIP computer phone providers, some of which are reputable, require a minimum of less than 10 kps (kilobytes per second) of bandwidth (information
carrying capacity), which is why their services can be used with dial-up connections or high speed (e.g., cable), satellite, and wireless connections.

Over 90% of VoIP services operate using industry standard codec (encryption codes) and industry standard protocols.

Computers are assigned a different numeric Internet Protocol (IP) address while on line, which is analogous to mail where you would have an identity location with your street
number, city, state and zip code.

Relative to a protocol, the IP (Internet Protocol) address is a number that identifies the user and their computer. Industry standard codec and industry standard protocols are open
and interpretable to the public. Unscrupulous hackers frequently launch their attacks against VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services that operate on these publicly open and
interpretable standards.

Peer-to-peer services, as well as over 90% of all VoIP computer phone services, operate on industry standard codec and industry standard protocols. In other words, their lines are
not secure.

IM services also create targeted vulnerability to vicious hacker attacks by a simple monitoring program made available that enables electronic eavesdropping.

Good luck!

Role of Effective-Communication in Offshore Engagement
by: John Parker

Proliferation of Virtual world has minimized the gap among businesses in the Global village. But, the appealing factor of virtual development that is implemented in Offshore Model
of “High quality, low cost endeavor” is often wrapped up with the complexity of being able to understand the other side. A weak Communication between the Offshore Client and the
Vendor can lead to problems such as
Productivity Loss
Mismatch of deliverables and expectations
Loss of valuable time
Redundancy of tasks

There is more to communication than merely conveying the content. Besides the semantics, which is the key to being at the same wavelength, Attitude and Diction with which the
information is shared are equally important. Software development outsourcing is the main field which mainly depends on the communication. Apart from the problems that arise from
differences in culture, language and time zone, the communication could be fudged if there are multiple people communicating from the offshore vendor side to the client. Such
ambiguities can be alleviated by implementing appropriate Strategies for communication, as mentioned below:

A. Using Communication Tools:
Email
Instant Messenger
Phone calls
VOIP
Extranets
Web Meetings
Virtual Office Cabinets
Ticket Management System
Customized communication applications

B. Guidelines, Practices and Discipline

The two shores should communicate by following certain guidelines and practices
Design the Discussion Document that takes into account the perspective from the both the offshore client and the vendor. The Document should outline the following:
Tasks
Roles assigned for the tasks
Mode of communication between the client and the vendor
Mode of intra-communication between the Software Teams and the Business Teams
How to tackle or mitigate any unexpected Issues or Risks
Status Reports [Daily, Weekly]
To avoid any communication gap, the correspondence should take place with discipline according to the defined schedule.
Risk of information loss is eliminated if both the client and the offshore vendor delegate their tasks through the Project Managers from either side, which enables smooth
information relay among the client and the vendor employees.

C. Techniques
Clarity of goals before any meeting or phone conversation
Concise to-the-point discussion
Documents with bullets and points
Send summary of discussion

Though E-Business communication tools such as e-mail, tele-conferencing, fax, chat, video–conferencing all serve as a conduit to effective and efficient means of information
transfer, their usage can be more productive if used with a planned approach. An effective communication does not end with a healthy initiation, but is sustained keeping the
momentum by maintaining agile response loop. Hence, a proactive approach from both the client and the Offshore Vendor is mandatory to further the business goals.

The New Ways To Do The Business: MBA or CIO?
by: J.C.Melo

The old and standard business administration concepts included in any current MBA program are very important, but today the companies are very different.

This new situation strong demands a new MBA program including the General Control Theory, the control engineering, the new business technologies, the Management by Exception
concept automated by computer systems, the Feedback Control System and several other subjects like Internet Marketing & Sales.

As we know the CIO is the abbreviation of “Chief Information Officer” and is a new professional, usually between the CEO and the other Directors including the IT Director. He don’t
replace the IT Director, with the exception in small companies.

A CIO Chief Information Officer has entrepreneurial experience and at the same time technical experience in Information Technologies. The entrepreneur usually has only the
entrepreneurial experience and the IT manager has only on technical matters. However business is more and more the information system and the information system is more and more
the business.

The companies are more and more electronics, as for examples the ERP Enterprise Resources Planning, the CRM Customer Relationship Management, the Voice over IP VoIP, the
sophisticated Call Centers, Business Intelligence BI, the Internet, the new Internet Marketing, etc. Therefore, to survive a modern business administrator must learn those new ways
to do the business and how to manage those modern enterprises.

In other words, the current MBA will be substituted by a CIO in a very short period of time. And a recent report from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the
primary accrediting body in North America lambasted its members for maintaining a curriculum that is out of touch with modern business practices. As a matter of fact, the current
MBA it’s an 60-years old curriculum in the begin of this digital age.

Real-Time Lake T1 Line Prices from Nationwide Service Providers

 T3 Connection FAQ

Written by: Patrick Oborn – Dec 3, 2008

A t3 connection is a point-to-point dedicated line that provides 672 64-Kbps voice or data channels or in other words 28 T1 lines. A T3 is used to transmit digital signals at 44.736 megabits per second and has enough bandwidth to transmit full-motion real-time video and very large databases over a busy network. A T3 line would be installed as a major networking channel for a large corporation or university with high volume network traffic.

When you need more capacity, you often have to buy it in the next available increment, which may end up costing more than you want or can afford to spend. Worse yet, with current, “burst” application requirements, the need for additional bandwidth can often be as temporary as it is critical. By providing flexible capacity, or “bandwidth on demand,” service providers can help customers deal with variations in traffic, and with avoiding a high fixed monthly payment. True bandwidth-on-demand services should allow for a wide range in capacity.

Although anybody can purchase a burstable T3, this type of connection can be costly, even as costly as a full 45Mbps connection. Burstable lines can be found at their lowest cost at a collocation facility. At a collocation facility, or “colo”, many users share a large OC3 or OC12 pipe. As a customer you will not have to pay for a the fixed cost of such a large pipe, but will have the benefit of being able to burst up to very high speeds if necessary. If you need the reliability of a large pipe fur busty traffic but don’t have the capital consider a colo. If you have a steady volume and are consistent, you may consider keeping services in house and going with a T3 connection. Whether you’re considering a collocation facility or a T3 to the door, make sure you use a broker to help guide you through the providers and plans available.
